Suffering in Silence:
Ending Mental Health Stigma
Men’s mental health is too often overlooked in today’s world.
Men are taught that they must be strong and that they must never show weakness. The negative stigma around men’s mental health forces men to be silent when they are suffering. When mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, are left undiagnosed for years, the result can be fatal.
In Australia, suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 15 through 44, with men representing 75% of such deaths. When men are dealing with mental health ailments, they often have no one to talk to, no one to turn to, and no one to get the help they need from. Men are taught that they must be strong and that talking about mental health issues makes them weak. This misconception has prevented too many men from sharing their struggles and receiving the help that they need.
One of our goals at Brothers4Brothers is to end the stigma around men’s mental health. We want to show men that it takes great strength and courage to open up about their mental health and seek the help that they need. We want to show men that silence is not the only option, that no one has to suffer in silence any longer. And, most importantly, we are here to help create a space where men can feel safe breaking the silence and stepping into the strength they need to begin their healing journey.
Personal Training:
The Journey to Physical and Mental Well-Being
At Brothers4Brothers, we have come to understand that physical and mental well-being go hand-in-hand.
For Willie Bishop, the founder of Brothers4Brothers, sports have always been an important part of life. As an exceptionally talented rugby player, he won the New Zealand Junior Sportsperson of the Year and New Zealand Maori Sportsperson of the Year awards when he was younger. He then spent a decade playing professional rugby league with the Sydney Roosters and Manly Sea Eagles before returning to rugby to represent Australia in the Sevens. He is now a personal trainer and lead instructor at F45.
Taking care of our physical well-being is an important part of the mental health healing journey. First, research has shown that men who exercise regularly have improvements in their mental well-being, including improvements in their sleeping and a reduction in stress and anxiety. Further, research has found that when we feel good in our bodies, our mental health improves as well!
In addition, exercising is an opportunity for men to build trust with one another and support each other in self-improvement. It is an opportunity for men to step into their strength, both physically and mentally. It is an opportunity for men to practice being strong for themselves and for each other. It is an opportunity to foster brotherhood and to be there for each other. Exercise and sports are not just about becoming physically stronger, but also about building trust and connection with one another.
When we have a community of men who we can trust, we are given the power to break the silence and take control of our mental health!
